What is a Cacao Ceremony?

Drinking Chocolate Together

A Cacao Ceremony is a sacred spiritual ritual where a group of people sit in a circle and each person is given a small cup of ceremonial-grade cacao, to sip slowly and mindfully. Cacao facilitates connection, healing, and self-exploration. The Maya verb chokola’j means: ‘drinking chocolate together’.  A beautiful space is created by the host who has lovingly prepared the mixture and will offer a  guided visualisation as part of the ceremony.  Cacao is made from 100% cacao beans which are harvested from the cacao tree, which is connected to the Cacao Spirit.

The ritual originates from ancient Mayan and Aztec traditions and has gained popularity in modern times for its ability to create a loving connection with yourself and others. Cacao’s energy is healing, motherly and very gentle. It holds the vibrations of kindness, unconditional love, and joy. Many people hear a calling to connect with the Cacao Spirit. This calling is described as curiosity, a longing for more connection, a whisper in the heart or a strong voice to reconnect with Mother Nature. It gives us time for ourselves in a hectic and stressful world.

Using guided visualisation, we journey deep within to discover more about ourselves, and find inner peace and clarity. It is the perfect space to switch off the noise, and focus inwards so that we can become clearer of who we are, where we are going, and the opportunities available to us.

Connecting with the heart

Cacao empowers the heart. When we connect with the heart’s energy our voice may speak from a place of deeper intelligence, carrying vibrations of peace. Sharing circles is a beautiful way to expand and share your energy with others. Cacao is more than chocolate, it is a spiritual dimension, an intelligence that we cannot perceive with the mind, but with the heart, the intuition and through feelings. Each cup of the cacao drink (made into a paste and then diluted with water or some alternative milk) is prepared to hold around 20g of cacao. This amount works best when going into a meditation or a creative process, or simply to get into a calm and serene space.

SET YOUR INTENTION

After about 15-20 minutes of drinking the cacao, you will start to feel deeply relaxed and light in your body. This is ideally when you set your intention. Questions to ask yourself could be :

  • Why am I sitting in Ceremony?
  • What aspect do I wish to explore?
  • In what area do I wish to receive clarity, ease, joy?

The ceremony leaves you feeling in a state of harmony. You can share your insights (symbolically) with Nature by speaking a prayer or words of gratitude. Be open to receive. Cacao gives us the profound opportunity to meditate, dream, paint, journal, play instruments, explore nature, move consciously, be silent or creative. Allow answers, symbols and feelings to arise from within.
