Managing Difficult Emotions
Many of us learned, often very early in life, that certain emotions were not welcome.
Sadness might have been met with discomfort.
Anger may have been discouraged.
Fear perhaps dismissed.
So we adapted. We put on a brave face. We stayed cheerful. We became the “strong one.” We learned to push feelings down in order to keep the peace or protect others.
This strategy often works for a while. But emotions that are suppressed do not disappear. They are simply stored.
Over time, unprocessed emotions can begin to manifest in more subtle, and sometimes more disruptive, ways.
How Suppressed Emotions Can Manifest Later in Life
When emotions are not acknowledged or expressed, they may surface as:
- Chronic stress or anxiety
- Low mood or emotional numbness
- Irritability or disproportionate reactions
- Physical tension, headaches, digestive issues
- Fatigue or burnout
- Difficulty setting boundaries
- People pleasing or fear of conflict
- A sense of being disconnected from oneself
From a psychophysiological perspective, the body holds emotional memory. Long term suppression keeps the nervous system in patterns of defence, either hyperarousal, such as anxiety and restlessness, or hypoarousal, such as shutdown and withdrawal.
Over time, this can affect immune function, sleep quality, hormone balance, and overall vitality.
Emotionally, we may find ourselves reacting from old patterns rather than responding with clarity and maturity.
How Mindfulness Helps Us Work With Emotions
Mindfulness does not ask us to relive the past or analyse every detail. Instead, it gently trains us to:
- Notice what we are feeling in the present moment
- Name emotions accurately
- Observe sensations in the body
- Stay with discomfort without immediately avoiding it
- Create space between stimulus and response
This is where real change begins.
Through mindful awareness, we move from being overwhelmed by emotion to being in relationship with emotion.
We learn that:
- Emotions are temporary states, not fixed identities
- All emotions carry information
- No feeling is inherently wrong
- We can feel deeply and still remain steady
When we bring compassionate attention to sadness, anger, fear or hurt, we allow the nervous system to settle. The body begins to release stored tension. The mind becomes clearer. Our responses become more intentional.
Thriving Mentally and Physically
Working skillfully with emotions leads to:
- Greater emotional intelligence
- Improved resilience under pressure
- Healthier relationships
- Clearer communication
- Stronger boundaries
- Reduced stress related symptoms
- Improved sleep and energy
- A deeper sense of inner stability
Instead of suppressing or exploding, we learn to regulate.
Instead of reacting, we respond.
Instead of disconnecting, we reconnect with ourselves.
This is not about becoming emotionless. It is about becoming emotionally fluent.

What This 4 Week Course Offers :
Over four weeks, we explore:
- Emotional awareness and nervous system understanding
- The body as a gateway to emotional regulation
- Working with difficult emotions such as anger, sadness, fear and shame
- Integrating mindfulness into daily life for long term resilience
The course provides practical tools, guided practices, reflective inquiry and gentle discussion, all within a safe and supportive space.
The intention is not to eliminate difficult emotions, but to develop the capacity to move through them with steadiness and self-awareness.
When we stop burying our feelings and start listening to them, we reclaim energy that was previously spent on holding everything in.
And that is where thriving begins.

The mindfulness course has been absolutely wonderful! It has taught me some fantastic new skills and strategies. Suzy is extremely skilled at supporting others to build on their strengths. I have found the group support extremely inspiring; this has done so much to build my confidence and strengthen my emotional wellbeing. Thank you, Suzy!

Suzy, attending your mindfulness course over the past year has taught me more in one year than I have learned in my whole life. I have learned to be myself and am encouraged to share in ways I never have before. The change I have seen in myself is truly remarkable. This year would not be ending the way it is without your teaching and support. You do not teach from a distance; instead, you share experiences of your own life.
