Adversity Smiles

Smile in the Face of Adversity

At this time of a Global Crisis, we may find that Adversity Smiles. For some of us the experience may not seem as bad as we would expected. The time we have now may be precious, for some, it may be quality time with the family and perhaps more time to yourself.

Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit.

Since the official lockdown on the 23rd of March, we have all, I am sure gone through a series of mixed emotions and perhaps utter bewilderment and shock at the beginning. However three and a half weeks later, I hope that things have settled in us. We may begin to appreciate how adaptable and resilient we are as human beings after all. There has indeed been so very much that’s new to us to adapt to.

Delving into the unknown

Above many other new ways of living and being, we have had to learn how to sit with the unknown! The ego mind needs to know, always. What are we doing, why, how and when will it start and finish! Well, no answers are here and we are learning how to cope with that.

The Process of Surrender

One of the most powerful learnings on the Spiritual journey is that of Surrender. Surrender to the present moment. Be here now. Let go of the past, let go of the future. In a time of crisis, the now is all we can focus on.

Once we have truly surrendered to our present situation and circumstances just as they are we begin to find peace.

Eckhart Tolle in his recent You Tube Video explains so clearly, how it is only our thinking that mostly creates havoc within us.

Nothing is good or bad, but the thinking makes it so – Shakespeare, Hamlet

The Middle way is to accept both good and bad in life and learn to embrace both with a smile.

The Middle Way

Perhaps right now we are drawn towards a profound spiritual path and we may not even realise it. We may be so focused on the disaster and drama of what’s happening in the world right now and the uncertainty of the future that we may be missing the gift in it.

Perhaps even at some unconscious level, we have created this? Each of us going through this right now may be receiving exactly what we need form it. Good or bad as we may choose to perceive it.

We may be experiencing conflicting emotions right now, some good and some bad.

What if we chose to remain neutral in our thinking right now. We chose The Middle Way as the Buddhists teach.

The more we delve into the middle way the more deeply we come to rest between the play of opposites

Non Attachment

The mental trick I learned through my yoga training and practice and spiritual journey over the last 20 or so years, was not to remain attached to either. Easier said than done, yes! But I keep at it, every time something amazing and wonderful happened to me, I embraced it, enjoyed it and when the time came to let it go, I let it go. When pain and loss came, I tried the same practice. Here it is, and remember it too will pass. Hmmmm, not so easy. Do-able but no easy. I think all said and done, it gets easier like everything with more and more practice.

I learned that one cannot exist without the other.

I learned to awaken an Inner smile and know that everything passes and everything returns.

Dealing with our Current Crisis

Here we are, ALL of us, in this global Coronavirus crisis, having to let go of everything and be present with our situation, whether we like it or not.

With each turn, this way and that, maybe, just maybe, we can learn to surrender to all that happens in life with the same response, Everything Passes, Good and Bad,  for in reality nothing is either good nor bad, it just is!

Be safe Be wise

Anxiety, worry for the future, resentment of the past, difficulty in coping with the present situation! All this can go. Meditation, Mindfulness, Hynotherapy can help.
